We live in a generation of Christians who are very selfish
who only think what they can get either from God or from their pastors. Though it’s
true that God has many blessing he has
for us and many He have entrusted to our spiritual leaders, yet he also have
given us a responsibility which so many ignore or take light of, and that is praying
for our spiritual leaders. The people God has placed over us need our prayers. We
can learn from Gods word what we specifically need to pray for.
1.
Whenever they stand to preach, God may give the
word to speak and the boldness to speak the secrets of the gospel. Ephians
6:19-20
Paul here is telling his spiritual children
his need of their p[prayer and what to pray for concerning him. In the same way
today, our leaders need our prayers that God may give them the words they need
to speak and also boldness. You may not have thought that preachers need to receive
what to preach and are also tempted to fear maybe because you have always seen
them bold in the pulpit and having a word from God, but Paul reveals that he
had fears and did not know what he was to preach, so also our preachers. Let us
therefore learn to pray for them.
2.
God to open doors of proclaiming the gospel and
making clear the gospel to the simple.
Paul when writing to his spiritual children
in Colossi, he tells them to pray for him that god would open doors for him to
preach the gospel and also that he would preach in simple way that everyone
would understand. Col 4:3, 4. Maybe you have ever gone to a meeting where a
preacher preached and you did not understand what he was saying, or he used
high sounding language which only the intellectuals could understand; the less
learned and the children got nothing out the meeting. There is our part in
that. We need to pray for our preachers that God would help them to preach in a
simple way that everyone would understand. We also need to p[ray that God would
open the doors of the gospel for them to preach. Yes, the devil is still active
and trying in every way to bring hindrances to the gospel. Some hindrances are
lack of finance, sicknesses, lack of peace in the family, and many others. Pray that God would open the door of the
gospel and remove every hindrance on the way.
3.
The gospel may spread rapidly and protection
from evil men. 2Thes 3:1-2
Paul here requests his children in the Lord
in Thessalonica that they pray that the message may spread rapidly. There is
always a tendency that as time goes on, the sense of urgency of proclaiming the
gospel reduces in time. More zeal and passion are at the beginning but later
tenderness is towards relaxation, therefore we need to pray that the zeal and passion
of the gospel will remain alive and continue to grow and that God will even
raise more shepherds to proclaim the message.
The true servants of God are a greater target
of the devil than any of us, as it is written, smite the shepherd and the sheep
will scatter. Zech 13:7. The devil is always scheming ways in which to destroy
or stop them. Pray that God will keep them from every attack of the enemy.
4.
Favor
In Romans 15:31, we see Paul asking for
prayers that his service maybe accepted by believers. It was not automatic that
because it was the apostle Paul who was preaching that the saints would accept
his message. He needed prayers that his preaching would be accepted. In the
same way, we need to pray that God would give our leaders favor wherever they
are sent to the people they are sent to. Therefore let us learn to pray for our
leaders
You are blessed to be a blessing.
