STUDY I
When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness to turn the stones into bread so that He can eat for He was hungry after fasting for forty days, and He had power to do it, and that should prove that He was the Son of God, He said that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Mathew 4:1-4. In other words, God has not told Him to turn stones into bread. He was listening to God.
Though, Jesus had power, when He took the limitations of man, and had to demonstrate to humans how God wanted man to live, by being an example, He showed us that when God gives us spiritual power, spiritual authority, and spiritual gifts, they are not to be used for our selfish purposes. We must listen to the words that proceeds from the mouth of God. Paul says that God gives us spiritual gifts so that we can bless others. 1Cor 12:7.
We have to develop the habit of listening to God to be able to use effectively the gifts that He has given us. God is constantly speaking, but unfortunately, many of His children have not learnt the art of listening.
Many say that God does not speak to them, thus blaming God, instead of blaming themselves. "The word that proceeds from the mouth of God" is in present continuous tense.
If you don't hear God speaking to you, it's not that God is silent, but that you are not listening.
We must learn to wait on God and listen to Him if we want to live in the most effective way possible spiritually.
If God is speaking, we must be proud not to listen to Him. Not to listen to God is the same as telling Him that we are wiser than Him.
Jesus said many times that He couldn't do anything from His own initiative but as he hears, He judges. John 5:30, 8:28, 12:49, 14:10.
The secret of Jesus ministry is that He listened to God constantly. He is to be our example. We must develop that art of listening to God all the time for us to be effective on earth in fulfilling the purposes that God has for our lives.
